Here goes nothing folks!
Well, I said I’d do it, so I’d better do it!
I’ve been thinking long and hard about where to start.
Trying to craft the perfect opening blog post that would engage anyone that read it, clearly communicate why I started the blog, encapsulate my vision and allow me to channel my innermost feelings and passions onto the page.
Then I realised that’s utter bollocks and nigh on impossible, and I should instead write from the heart and worry about the rest later.
So that’s what I’m doing.
I work in hospitality and manage a wonderful independent restaurant in the heart of Soho, London.
I love the hospitality industry. It is full of amazing people and the buzz I get from a busy room of diners is second to none.
My team is dedicated, fun, crazy and a little on the weird side (just how I like it) and we keep each other going when things get funky.
So why think about coaching?
You might be thinking “if that’s all true, then why are you writing this wellness coaching blog Gem?”. Good question my friend!
I’ve had many different roles in my career and one thing that’s been there throughout is my love of people.
I thought this was the same for everyone, but it turns out that’s not the case.
I love working in teams and pulling together to create something inspiring and new. I love working 1-on-1 and learning what makes another person tick.
I also love random chats with strangers while out walking or on a train. Catching someones eye and just smiling for no other reason than to make them smile.
One person’s creepy is another person’s friendly!
I like the feeling of helping someone achieve something they thought they couldn’t do.
It’s very altruistic and makes me feel great about myself too.
I make no apologies for that. It’s a Win Win situation.
Life is a constant learning journey
Because of the Covid lockdown I (and the rest of the world) have had some time to think about how I eat, and my relationship with food and exercise.
I’ve had a lot of ups and downs with my health and weight over the years (something to come back to on a later post perhaps) and I’ve figured out some things that have helped me get through tough times.
Losing my parents young gave me a crash course on health. I don’t care how much money you have in the bank, without our health, we really don’t have much.
All the money in the world can’t replace good health.
It’s made me hyper aware of the issues we face as a society around chronic health issues such as obesity, diabetes and long term stress causing burnout at work and heartbreak at home.
I want to be part of the solution to helping overcome the challenges we face and play a small part in helping people take control over their own health and happiness.
My path isn’t clear yet, but that’s OK. I’m starting this adventure with an open mind and I will grab every opportunity I have to learn and grow my knowledge and expertise.
If you made it this far, thanks for sticking with me
Gem x
